Real picture for tracing
« on: November 30, 2009, 10:51:12 pm »
Is it possible to place an actual picture as a background while I'm making a map? I want to be able to "trace" the image using PolyWorks. Once I finished making the polys, etc, I would remove the image and make a normal background.

Yes, save the outline of your map to your soldat scenery folder, then look for it in your scenery list in polyworks (if you dont see it try closing PW and starting it again) - set it to the "back" layer and you should be able to put polygons over it without the picture getting in the way.
For signatures, you are allowed only one image in your signature which may not be wider and taller than 300 and 125 pixels, and may not be over 20kB in file size. No BMPs are allowed.

Thanks p0ppin! This will make it a lot easier for a beginner like me to make some awesome INF maps :)

Two more questions (without making a new thread).
1. There is an overhead view of a river in the picture I'm tracing. Is it possible to make the water.bmp scenery match the curves of the river? Right now I'm only getting squares of water.

2. I tried testing my map, even though it isnt finished. However, I kept flying into the "edge" of the map (where it teleports you back to spawn point), even though there was plenty of map left. How can I alter the dimensions of my map to fit everything?

Not quite sure what you mean. :S A picture would help.

Simply place a few invisible "doesn't collide" polygons at the sides of the map and it should stretch the edges of the map automatically.
Nvm... You probably moved your map too far from 0-coordinate (center of the canvas), so it goes out of boundaries. You need to select everything and move it away from the border.

I still don't exactly understand what you're trying to do. :/ Most you can do with a scenery is stretch and rotate it, but not change its shape.
You can rotate and resize water.bmps and make them kinda follow the curves of the river. Or you can create a single scenery with a cutout of that river.

If I do make the river a cut out from the picture, other people won't have the scenery in order to play it right?

I decided this picture isn't a good one to make into a map by the way. I might use another building by Frank Lloyd Wright.

They will download it if you do it properly.
Also, that is a top-down view, and as such isnt a good template imo.
Last year, I dreamt I was pissing at a restroom, but I missed the urinal and my penis exploded.

Right. I was thinking I might be better off with an elevation or maybe even a section view.

I was also thinking of doing a plan view of Robie house. These are just ideas I've had for a while =D
