make autodemo auto demo
« on: January 05, 2010, 01:34:39 pm »
what's the fucking point in having an auto demo that doesn't save it self, it isn't an auto demo if you have to press F8 to save the demo. then it's just like having to press F8 at start and then F8 at end.

everytime you do something epic, you lose the clip cuz you didn't press F8 in time.

So my suggestion looks like this: autodemo should record demo from every map you play and it should stop after maps end. It ought to name files like: "ctf_Ash_05012010_2025" so you would know that this demo was recorded when you were playing ctf_Ash on the fifth of January 2010 year about 8:25 pm. It would be really helpful. And it won't overwrite existing files.

agreed, altho, I'm enough happy with it just saving them automatically. the normal demo feature should maybe replaced by the current autodemo feature.

I agree for adding this, it sounds cool, can't count the amount of awesome stuff I have done...Maybe add and option that allows you to specify the length of the demo, say, it would run for 5 minutes and then stop and save. Upon pressing F8 it would do the same. Same thing for autodemo length.

you can change the recording length, but as far as I know, only 2 minutes or 99 minutes works, if you pick anything inbetween it'll just be 2 minutes.

Just to be clear, I just want it to name files. I like how autodemo works now.
- If you set Record_Time=10  in soldat.ini it will record 10 min.
- But if you record lots of demos, you need the ability to set Record_Time=2  because you don't want to look through any unnecessary recordings.

Nice feature, F12. Though there's something else I'd REALLY like to see in terms of how demo recording works:

Autodemo that saves the demo of the last # seconds. This is intended mainly for saving short but cool moments instead of whole matches. So let's say you assplodekerpoontered someone in a very impressive way and want to save that moment - you could press a "save demo" key and save the demo of the last 15 seconds of gameplay.
With the way it works now you have no control over when the demo starts and how much time it saves. It could save 5 minutes of boring useless crap, or it could only save the last 2 seconds of what you wanted to save.

For naming and organizing demos there could be some sort of metadata stored within demos (map, date, weapon mod, server, etc), and then when it comes to naming files - you could specify the name pattern which can then be used by Soldat or some 3rd party demo manager, for example:
%serverIP% (%date%) - [%map%].sdm

I joined a game with autodemo on, Record_Time=1
When I joined it was 07:15 time left
I pressed F8 exactly 06:00 time left
You would then think I would get recordings from 07:00 time left to 06:00 time left (1 min)
But what I got was: 06:15 time left to 06:00 time left. (15sec)
If I had done anything amazing on the last 15 seconds I would have missed it.

<SyavX> autodemo records not last N minutes (as it has to be), it records demos in intervals with N minutes.
