Here's the mail I wrote for the reporter of the Paris Observer regarding one of our projects:

Quote
...
As one of the founders of the project, I'll be glad to give you some information for an article.

There's some background information that needs to be covered first:

The transportation company is owned by the state and is gravely underfunded by the city itself, and while they are cutting the budget more and more, the head honchos of the company have been blindly robbing it with billions(!) over the years. Needless to say, the bus drivers grew more and more aggravated, and after some push-pulling in the past few weeks (eg. not going out with buses that are already too worn, cutting out two or three hundred vehicles for a couple of days) their unions decided it was time for a strike.

Note that the subway, trolley drivers and those lines whom belong to different companies did not join the strike, but the buslines take the biggest load of transporting people from the suburbs to downtown. Only about ten tram vehicles are moving in the whole city.

Negotiations are going slowly, and it's clear that the strike is hurting the citizens more than the company itself, which is having a good portion of it's leading staff prosecuted by law with charges of corruption and related issues.

That was our default situation before the BKV-pótló project started off.

Let it be noted that we are part of an organization called 4K! (which can be translated as Fourth Republic), a team of community-based thinkers. We have been organizing flashmobs and urban playground events over the last two years, moving thousands of people and showing that if people join together for a common cause, we can and will achieve great things.

Two fellows of this organization started their own project, called colabs, which is a community workplace for freelancers and other coders not tied to an office building. It's real chill, and our 4K! meets take place there from time to time, as it did on Wednesday.

By the time I got there the three others (Bence Bogár, Gábor Borbély and András Istvánffy) were already brainstorming about something and quickly filled me in on the details. This community transportation idea has been thrown around for months they said, but with the strike came the perfect opportunity to launch it.

At first it was more complicated, with area codes and whatnot, tied to a web based interface, but after some verbal banter and vetoing, it was stripped down to six rules, three for drivers and three for pedestrians.

If you're a driver, write your destination on a paper and put it under the wind-shield. If you see someone hiking, pick him up in a bus stop. Do not ask for money.

If you're a pedestrian, wait in a bus stop and hike. Respect the driver, don't talk if he doesn't want to and be cool with whatever he's listening on the radio. Have a 100 HUF on you if you want to show your gratitude.

Last we christened it as BKV-pótló. Pótló means replacement, and is frequently used by the company for buslines replacing trams or trolleys, and BKV is the name of the company. We also use a paraphrase of their motto: turning 'We go for you' into 'We go instead of them'. (Önnek jár.->Helyettük jár.)

Starting off was easy after this: the 4K! group has an impressive mailing list, we had lots of media contacts and we sent our idea to major transportation focused sites and blogs.

With full support, by the next morning the facebook group of the project had over three thousand supporters. As I am writing this, it's more than seven thousand and growing. The Mayor became a fan, his wife offering a ride this morning. (The irony. It hurts. He's the main reason why the company lacks funding!)

Bence gave an interview about the movement in the early morning show on the state TV channel. It was rerun today.

Radio broadcasts caught on, some trying their own version, others propagating us. The movement has by this point gone through all available media channels, and everyone and his grandmother knows about it now.

And it's working. More and more people are hiking and reaching their destination on time. The drivers were surprisingly even more supportive of the idea than the pedestrians, which is insane considering the public opinion of Hungarian road mentality. You can see people carrying signs at bus stops and cars even without a marked destination are stopping and helping.

We've made it. And it feels great.

Another fellow within 4K!, who lives in the outskirts of the city is starting to organize this system to work even after the strike in his area, because the mass transportation there pretty much sucks by default. If others do the same, we might actually be able to revolutionize the city's transportation!

That is what I can say after a few days. For pictures and various information, check out the facebook group and the blog. If you need something translated or have more questions, I'll be glad to help.

best regards,
Gergő Varga, 4K!.

the group has over 8000 members right now and people are hiking all over town.

Why are you pissed now? And those "your mom" jokes are too old to be funny.

Troll. Somebody please destroy this useless waste of human existence.

I can run 30 kilometres on snow, ice, mud and soil through forests, small rivers, over inclines with a 15kg rucksack full of sand on a cold day in less than four hours. Got a medal for that actually. I'm going to do it again this March.
Here are examples of the terrian. They are pics taken from the same race that I took part of.
*snow
*Ice
*Mud
*Concrete
I'm not present on any of the pics.

Hey man are you from Estonia? I think the pictures are from Scoutsbattallions race?

Yeah man, I sure am and those sure are. Good to know that you know of the event.

I liked this thread! That's why I necropost and add some of my brain-jizz to it. I wrote this poem yesterday, hope you enjoy reading it:

The Devil's Spawn

Let me tell you the story of Mrs Parker and her spouse
Which plays in a small village where we find the Parker's house.

Trapped inside there is a little boy
Who is treated like their special toy.

Poor Little Tom, that is the name
Which is engraved on the cold chain

Which connects his body to the wall;
And did one know, the message would sprawl,

Torches be lit and the Parkers go to jail,
But no one knows of their profanity stale.

And so poor Little Tom, he knows no light.
Every hope he seeds dies to blight.

Indeed, there is but one question to ask:
What secret do the Parkers hide behind their mask

To hide Little Tom in darkness, their only son?
Why would they not let him see the sun?

I shall give you the answer, but please be warned
That after hearing it, your faith may be harmed,

For Little Tom is not Henry Parker's son,
He's the Devil's spawn, and it has only begun.

Soon, soon, the world will have changed
Into a dark place; cruel and estranged,

Should Poor Little Tom ever escape the chains
Which keep the Devil's blood from flowing through his veins.

Should Tom die, the world would remain the same.
The Devil's a gambler, and this is his favourite game.

Playing with the fears and love of the family,
The Devil draws strength from their sanity.

That at least is why Little Tom lays in chains.
For us to hope is that he always remains

In the cold, dark place which should be his grave,
That the Parkers stay strong and brave.

If they do, this story ends like many.
The good prevails of course, and if any

Then Poor Little Tom will live all right.
And would that not be to your delight?

Unfortunately, this is not how this story goes,
And for reasons which Laura Parker only knows

She is the one who breaks the curse
When she reaches deep down into her purse,

Drawing a kitchen knife with silver blade
Which reflects the face of this brave maid.

With trembling fingers she strikes at her son
Frantically crying for Tom, her only one.

Poor Little Tom died for the greater good,
So the mother should not be misunderstood.

She killed for love and not for hate.
The world's fate has a much bigger weight.

For now the world is safe and sound.
The Devil was sent back into the ground,

Where Tom now sits next to the throne
Of the father who did not bemoan

The death of his spawn, who knew but pain,
Who's name was engraved on a thick chain.

Thus is the story of poor Little Tom,
And I admit that you read it aplomb;

So fear not the Devil, for you are safe.
As long at least 'til you hit the grave,

Because then you be his little toy.
Just like Tom, his little boy.

I'd post my recent drawing of a personified (and badly posed) Snorunt, but there's a separate thread for art. :(

I can fast-walk down the stairs by only stepping on every other step, if that counts. :P
