Karma system as a Profile -> Modify Profile -> Look and Layout on/off option. When off, others' votes will still add up but your karma won't be open to the public.

There's no reason to have karma if it's not public. You might as well just keep a personal log of your karma offline.

First I supported karma system, but now my support has weakened a bit mainly because... we already have a better feature called "report to moderator". Though I'm not sure if most users here know how to use this feature properly.

To be honest, I almost never use this feature simply because I never pay attention to the lower-right corner of the posts, so the "report to moderator" button always slipped past my eyes until recently. I wonder if it's just me...
Maybe it would be better to move the "logged" link somewhere else and make the "report to moderator" as a button that would be more noticeable?

To prevent abuse there can be no negative karma, only positive. And a maximum of, let's say, +50 karma. So if you get +karma - that's good. If you have 0 - it doesn't make you a bad person either.

Isn't one of the main points of karma to motivate people with low/negative karma to do better? If 0 is the lowest you can get and it's socially acceptable, then nothing really is achieved. I think it should be able to go negative, start at zero, and people who fluctuate around 0 should be regarded as "ok."

But anyway karma is mostly pointless when you have very few active members, which seems to be the case here.

Good point... but from what I've seen, some people actually WANT negative karma and would deliberately ask others to -K them.
Also, some like to feel special, so "nothing really achieved" can already be enough of a motivator for some.

For motivation there has to be some sort of reward other than having a high karma. A medal below an avatar maybe?

Personally I think having any text colored other than black (and the blueish color the links are) in the user side of a post is distracting as hell.
