I need to be enlightened or learned
« on: July 04, 2010, 08:05:51 pm »
Our human eye can only see light wavelength at around 780nm~620nm (color red) to 455nm~390nm (color blue/purple). It is true that some animals can see other light spectrum that we human beings cannot see such as bees: they can see ultraviolet lights.

Then I have a question, human beings can see X-Ray pictures by converting the light spectrum compatible to our vision, right? (If not, please correct me, because I really am curious of how X-Rays work, wikipedia can be a pain) If that is the case, if we were to see lights beyond our range, will there be views that we have never seen before?

Another question!
Some people believe in ghosts, or should I say supernatural view. There are even exorcists or people who actually can talk with ghosts. The relation to ghosts and our vision is, animals who can see during the night such as bats and cats sometimes act abnormally. If this is the case, if we human can see objects without light, will we able to see ghosts or any super natural occurences?

You can answer both of them if you guys want to.
So now, care to talk about it? Or is it too much of a pain? I've been researching about light in physics for a week, and I'm pretty into it.

Without light you cannot see anything. Ghosts or those bullshit orbs are exactly that, bullshit. I highly doubt an animal can see beyond the visible spectrum.

i for one believe that dogs hold the power to view minute vibrations in the earth as slight distortions in the air allowing them to spot mailmen and earthquakes long before they actually arrive.

Well I DID mention bees. Or are they it -_-

Besides, the fact that you say ghosts are bull shit clearly helps me realize you're quite close-minded D:

I don't know if you're joking about the mailmen or not, but yeah, certainly there are animals who can detect those minute movements. Such as rats!

I'm pretty sure it's true that other animals see more than just light. I think some reptiles (maybe not just reptiles) even see heat waves. Bats, for example, don't even use their eyes much - they navigate using sound waves instead.

And of course everything would look a whole lot different if we could see more than just light. Imagine seeing everything in X-Ray or heat waves. :D

Not sure how X-Rays work, but my guess is that it's probably some kind of ray that goes through your body, and depending on what it goes through - some of the X-Ray gets reflected back and gets captured in form of an image. Bones seem to be most X-Ray-reflective, which is why you can see them easily on X-Ray images.

If this is the case, if we human can see objects without light, will we able to see ghosts or any super natural occurences?
Most "visions" work the similar way. You just need an organ that is sensitive to a certain kind of waves (heat, sound, light, whatever). So theoretically you could detect some kind of "ghost waves" if your organs were capable of detecting whatever ghosts emit. But obviously our bodies aren't capable of that. I imagine there would be some kind of cyber implants in the distant future that would enhance our vision and allow us see more things. :P
In other words: if something IS - theoretically it can be detected in one way or another. But we don't always have the means to do that.

Without light you cannot see anything. Ghosts or those bulls**t orbs are exactly that, bulls**t. I highly doubt an animal can see beyond the visible spectrum.
those "orbs" do actually exist... my sister were recently on some kind of school thingy. to visit the "vasa ship". all the pictures were full of those light big dots, which wasn't there when she was just looking. she even recorded it and you could even see some moving.
even tho what those "orbs" actually are might not be anything related to ghosts etc. but they do, infact exist.

anyway, to answer the question.
you probably have heard about "infrared" cameras? those are cameras that can take up infrared light waves, which is less (I dunno if it's faster or slower wavelengths) than ultraviolet.
when it comes to x-ray... diffrent kind of wavelengths can pass trough diffrently thick materials. like the light waves we can see, can pass trough glass and other thin things. but other wavelengths, like beta or gamma, can go trough a lot thicker materials.
I might have mixed up everything with each others now but...

to the superficial question. I guess some animals can see those "orbs" and maybe even more. enhancing human vision, or making an apparatus to convert those light or whatever wave length into ones we can see could maybe give us some new visions...

You have to be either gullible or stupid to believe in ghosts

Thought the same thing. Until a reasonable person explain upwards of about 10 stories to me. I don't believe in the stereotypical [Halloween-ish] ghost bullshit, but I am convinced that shit is out there that can manifest itself in weird ways.

Then I have a question, human beings can see X-Ray pictures by converting the light spectrum compatible to our vision, right? (If not, please correct me, because I really am curious of how X-Rays work, wikipedia can be a pain) If that is the case, if we were to see lights beyond our range, will there be views that we have never seen before.

4th of July celebrations have had me drinking quite a bit, so bear with me. But I'll try to answer:

It's true that certain animals can see wavelengths that we cannot perceive. Bees, for example, can see in the ultraviolet portion of the spectrum (smaller wavelength, higher energy waves than we can see) and snakes can detect (but not see with their eyes) waves in the infrared portion of the spectrum (longer wavelength, lower energy waves; they radiate energy from warm objects).

I don't entirely understand the second portion of your question, so I'll answer it in two different ways. Human beings cannot see X-rays the way we can see visible light. This is why x-ray detectors are so useful. If you stick your eyes right up to an x-ray emitter, though, you'll see blue light, but it'll be fuzzy and you'll never see anything with the fidelity that you do in typical x-ray photography. Since so few tests have been done on this phenomenon, it isn't clear whether we can actually detect x-rays with our eyes or if the light is secondary -- that the x-rays are hitting some portion of our eyes and create light as a result, which we then see.

As for x-ray photography, that's a way to convert a previously invisible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum into a form that we can see. We do this with gamma rays and microwave radiation as well when we take pictures of the stars. So, with the help of technology, we can see things in portions of the spectrum that we wouldn't ordinarily be able to perceive. It doesn't mean that we wouldn't be able to see the matter that was already there, but now we know how hot it is, how much energy is left over from the big bang, how radioactive it is, etc.

Does that answer your question?

Vijcht is pretty spot on.

As for you second question, assuming ghosts are 'real', and they operate within a colour spectrum that man cannot view, it is entirely possible that some animals would be able to see or sense it. Through evolution, we as a species have not required extensive optic capabilities, and when you compare our vision to that of many animals, we are ranking quite low.

But since no solid proof has even been brought forward about the existence of ghosts, ectoplasm or whatever, I'd advice you to discard any such theory. You won't get far.

Right on, quantum physics has so many unofficial theories, such as string theory. It is also believed that we can go through walls (i know, wtf), but it has such a small chance, that we will probably need to simply push the wall for the rest of our lives to experience it.

Well, maybe I misunderstood something, but if there's no light AT ALL, then you can't see anything. And even cats.
If the question is "Can animals see ghosts or other bullshit?" then the answer is still NO. Bats cannot see anything that good really. but they use ultrasound (they can hear it, not see it)
Cats just have better eyes. Hehe.

There's no such thing as an ``official" theory. String theory is a theory because it's internally consistent and explains observable phenomena.

this is quite superstitious nonsense imo... since it states particles acts diffrently if they are observed or not.

and this is also about dimensions and such... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWyTxCsIXE4&feature=related

btw :p, these videos are kinda made for kids~ so bear with it
