Canada ~ what's the best city to live in?
« on: August 26, 2010, 09:26:56 pm »
Right now I live in Winnipeg (MB), Canada. My parents are planning to move to a different city somewhere around next year, and for now they've set their eyes on Ottawa. However from what I hear, that city's a little crammed and the weather's horrible for the most part.

Since I know almost nothing about other Canadian cities, I'd like to hear your opinions and suggestions. What other good Canadian cities are there and what are their cons and pros?

I only know we probably won't be moving to:
- Montreal (too french)
- Toronto (too busy)
- Vancouver (high crime rates)

I'd go with Toronto. From its wikipedia article it seems to have have the most developed infrastructure, the largest set of businesses, the most beautiful scenery and warmest climate. And it's right up against a lake, so you can say things like "meet me at the pier," dispose of dead bodies easily and go boating in the summer.

I'd say America but lets be serious, you don't want to be here.

What do you want in a city? Some people love new york despite it being a dirty crime ridden hellhole.

Nothing flashy and expensive like all those big American cities. So things I'm looking for in a city are:
- low crime rates
- not too busy/crammed or noisy
- clean environment
- decent climate
- at least 80% people speak english (since none of us know french)

I heard Halifax and St.John's are decent (and houses are a LOT cheaper than in Ottawa), but I heard crime rates are relatively high there too, and weather isn't exactly great either. That's just what I heard though.

Toronto, or the surrounding GTA.

- low crime rates
>depends where you live, but most of Toronto has a low crime rate. If you want almost no crime, move to Burlington which is like only 30 KM from TO, it's almost too peaceful
- not too busy/crammed or noisy
>Depends where you're going to live in TO.
- clean environment
>Yes.
- decent climate
>You live in Winnipeg, which is cold as hell in the Winter. Almost anything is more than decent :P
- at least 80% people speak english ()
>No problems in TO.

Ottawa is a good choice though. In terms of $ what are they looking at? Cheapest in Toronto looking at around 400k for a very small home. I don't know how much that is compared to most homes in Winnipeg...

Well, from what I heard Ottawa is really humid which leads to really hot summers and lots of dirt and ice in winter. And that IMHO is even worse. That's the only thing that worries me about Ottawa so far. Don't know how it is in Toronto though.

In terms of $ - no more than 265k. But we're looking for a townhouse which is just being build, and they're generally much cheaper than existing houses. There are decent 1700+ square feet ones for about 260k. Don't know about Winnipeg though.

Thanks a lot for the info. From what you described, it seems that Toronto might be a decent choice as well, unless the houses are too expensive for us.

I think its possible to get a Townhome in the GTA for around 265k. But not in Toronto itself.
