Soldat Gather App (?)

A facebook app could never be a bad thing. We want people to look at something on fb, be led to the site and play the game. Whether that's through *a lite version* a gather app (possibly not) or something else, it's not a bad idea.

Fan page won't be enough and I am fairly certain one exists already(I can't say for sure as I don't use Facebook myself). What would be needed would be some kind of a gather App in which people could add themselves in and after there are, say 6 people gathered, the server details are given to those 6 players and they join and play e.g. 3v3 CTF game.

Then again, what on earth is so scary about using IRC that people actually prefer to use some kind of "web gathers"?

I use IRC pretty often, there is not anything to scare of. Just more players to everywhere, and shit doesn't happen. New, PLAYING players. New players.

1.4 has quite working promotional campaing for Soldat as far as I can tell, there were news about the new version on multiple websites, including Digg for example which drew ALOT of people to here. Just check the forum statistics of new members etc. from April-May 2007. ..and it just makes me depressed. It's almost 4 years since 1.4 came out and it has taken 4 years to get here. And everything still sucks. Sigh.

It depends on how you start with IRC. You can follow an outdated overcomplicated guide for an overcomplicated IRC client, or you can use something like http://webchat.quakenet.org/  I had a sad experience of taking the first option because at that time I didn't know of other options.

Imagine following a 3DS Max tutorial which is written for an older version of the software, and with you having absolutely no previous experience in 3D Editors. It's the same for first-time IRC users.

who the hell wants to play 1o1 - 2o2 - 3o3 - if u can play a crazy mod - for example : EZS bonecrusher's elite zombie survival

so u shouldnt focus about gathers... or what u talk about else... u should focus on the public servers in the lobby list
cauze thats what the most players use...

so maybe just publishing soldat more... and if i say more i mean rly more^^ facebook / youtube what else is big everywhere should be fucking alot promotion for soldat! ^^

(so far i didnt see soldat ANYWHERE!) i just found the game on 1.0 when the german gamer magazine "Computerbild Spiele" or what it was added the game to a dvd disk they have in the magazine...

i think the most ppl dont know about the game soldat... and i think also if all would know we would've alot more players^^

Ontopic: getting more players is the least that you can do for soldat at this point imo. The current state of the game would just scare the people away. It would be more reasonable to wait for the new version to come out (now that there are actually some people working on it) and then strike with the full advertising power.

i learned english in games over the years, and a small gramar part in scool^^
so u cant judge anyone with only see some black letters on a blue background ^^

and its possible that hes older... still im soon 20 ^^

w/e i guessed we had the age part....

and i like the current soldat version whats wrong on it..? there was worser version before...

the only thing i dislike is the steyr with 25 bullets... everything else could stay if u ask me

Yes, I admit making an in-browser version of Soldat on facebook would attract a lot of people. However making the graphics identical is impossible. Doing it in javascript would certainly crash any modern browser; a java applet might work, but would require rewriting soldat in java (as would a javascript version); and just linking it for download is something we already have. I was the sole coder of this project. The reason I did it was because MM said he wanted it done and I didn't feel like watching someone else halfass it.

Again, the reason why soldat is declining is not necessarily because this current version is one of the worse versions ever.

Soldat as a whole is so catered to this "gather" community that we often forget a very important piece of Soldat's progression. The new players. It's already bad enough that there isn't much advertising beside gaming review websites and youtube. Well, it is understandable because it is was done low-budget by MM and he's done great imo with what he had.

But I definitely see a problem when there are more stable private gather servers than there are public servers. I see a problem when I as a US player, has to go to a EURO server to enjoy a game because there are no decent active US servers. I see a problem where the majority of the community, which locates in Europe, only has less than 5 decent EURO servers to not only accomodate me, but the whole European community. I see a problem when you have to use a third party application or use a website to login to gathers to play a decent match.

I'm looking through the perspective a new player who somehow found this game. I just want to step in and play but I can't.

*Join server* What? Why is noone here. I quit. What a bogus game.

I see a problem where there are no public servers to get a learning curve. And the the level of skill quality is a drastic change to overwhelm any first time player to the point he/she quits immediately.

No, not your English, but the way in which you "make" your points.
It's too f**ked up to explain...But whoever's on the same page as I am, will probably know what I'm talking about here.

@Jerich: You know, I live in Jordan, yet learning on a Euro server was easy and fun.
You're making too much of a deal about this whole gather thing, whenever I search the lobby for non-modded Ctf's I always find at least 15-20 full servers, and a couple dozens of semi empty servers where guys are too damn lazy to get out and join a more active server.
It's not that gathers have taken over, but more that today's gamer is lazy as f**k, they're too lazy to search through lobbies to play a decent game. And there's absolutely nothing we can do about that.
