Better uniform designs
« on: March 26, 2011, 06:36:17 pm »
The current alpha and bravo uniforms seem really plain to me...are we able to make it look better. Like Counter-Strike Source has like 4 different types of designs for CT/T why can't we have a few different ones for Alpha/Bravo teams. I mean, make it as if you can distinguish or differentiate from the other team and teammates tho but it would make the game look that extra bit better. Just the current design looks really plainnnn to me :/

I most definitely agree !! Maybe make it better by adding designs to it.

What the hell kind of distinctive design do you expect from ~50 pixels that will only be various shades of a single colour ?

F11

If anything, Id say extend the team colour to pants, not just the shirts.

Anyway, I don't like the idea of completely replacing classic skin, but I do agree there should be a few more and better outfits.
I also like the idea of having players on different teams use different skins. I know it's already possible with mods, but wouldn't it be better to have something built-in too?

Ideally it would be better to just have shirt and pants customizable, like hairstyles and headgear.

Theres a big difference between the same default tshirt with a pretty pattern on it ie a UNIFORM, and a torso thats been remoulded to resemble a totally different shape altogether.

If you take the default torso and put a pattern onto it so its not all one colour you will first encounter the problem of finding a pattern that is distinctive enough to be noticeably cool using less than 50 pixels and shades of the same colour (shades that have to be far apart to even be visible). Now this pattern has to be so effing brilliant and revolutionary that it can be deemed worthy of replacing a basic gostek uniform. Likely? No. Of practical significance? No.

Im all for more outfits, but seriously guys, when everything of any variation is a bmp thats 6 damn pixels in total - what the hell is the practical point? If this is something worth doing, then so is redrawing the entire damn game at a higher resolution, so frankly Id rather worry about that than trying to justify forcing something into a system that was too short-sighted to facilitate expansion in the first place. I honestly think we're more imaginative than to go through every permutation of 8bit pixel art.

Rearraging pixels gives it details, though I'm pretty sure you won't be able to tell apart anything unless it's either the "simple" or the "detailed".

And I'm pretty sure the op didn't mean this.

Yeah, I don't remember op mentioning adding DETAIL to the uniforms, I think he meant looks in general. I agree that graphics really are too small for any kind of detail, but different SHAPES of clothes for different teams will do just fine.

In short, get a mod.
So you're saying that it's ok to leave a vanilla game looking boring and fugly just because it's moddable? First impression is important, so it's a good idea to improve vanilla looks at least a little bit.

The base soldat graphics aren't THAT bad.

They aren't bad, but they are a little plain and generic. So IMHO the least that should be done is adding a slightly different skin for the other team to add a little variation.

To be honest, the fact that the original graphics where "little plain and generic" what the main reason that I started modding.
