Minigun buff
« on: April 02, 2011, 03:03:28 pm »
1. The minigun should have no startup time, however your rate of fire starts out very low and gradually increases - reaching max fire rate after a second or two. This is because the barrel must spin.

2. After you stop shooting, the barrel would gradually spin down. Because of this, if you stop shooting and then fire .5 seconds later, you would reach full speed much quicker. This allows you to shoot in small bursts.

This would allow the minigun to be used more tactically and less spamming of full clip.

Wow, I think this is the first time I actually hear this idea, and it doesn't sound ridiculous at all.
Sounds quite reasonable as a matter of fact, and it would definitely help with the whole "Spamming Surf Shitstorm" that is the Minigun.
Don't know if it can be implemented though.

I'm not interested in the mini-gun for me its like there is no mini-gun in most servers its disabled and everyone play with the remaining 9 weapons...
in my opinion remove and add something else what would be "different" from the other weapons... or leave it as the second role ( for nothing) idea looks nice but to much work for a mini-gun anyway if that would be added that would mean much players with mini-guns shooting and spraying around... for me nice idea but not necesary f11

I feel like this would lead to people continually shooting to keep speed of barrel up, well shooting in bursts a spray if there is noone near, just so they dont get owned when someone comes flying by and they can only pop off five shots while the opponent is able to fill them with a clip of mp5.

As a person that uses minigun frequently I must disagree with that statement.

With startup, as it is now, I usually try not to shower on people, because 100 bullets dry out fairly quickly. With severe eating in mind I use even up to a 50+ bullets on a single target to seal the kill. So in order to get on small killing sprees with as little reloads as possible one must pick on the weakened and preserve bullets and/or dodge and hide behind polys while reloading. The whole "starting slowly" consequently means less time surfing and would just cost us more bullets that people would eat anyways. Because Soldat hates hit detection.

Other thing is that one can get fairly quickly adapted to the mechanism of the startup, and is basically a must to press the startup the whole game so that even if you get surprised by a quick player out in the open you have a slight advantage with already started minigun.

I'd just use your second suggestion of decreasing cooldown-startup time, but without actually firing any bullets, because OH MY F* GOD how many times have I died just because I released the mouse button either on accident, to adjust bink, or to unprone without looking back and losing precious bullets..

Also, if hit detection would increase because of the slower fire rate people could abuse that 1-2 seconds to transform minigun to a Minimi with 100 bullets.

Great suggestions. I think that combining these tweaks with overheating would make it a lot easier to balance the minigun and making it fun and fair.

I'm not down with this one. I feel like it would cause more harm than good, if I'm honest.

I take it you're not impressed?

If you're gonna be like that, then I'm just gonna retract my comment. I hope you're happy now.

I vote for more ammo + overheating, but not for slow-to-fast shooting speed at start. It'll make it impossible to pre-spin the barrel without shooting.

Ever since you switched to 12th account you've been such a pissy missy. Whats wrong?

I made a little test example:

http://www.host-a.net/u/pubby8/minigun_test.zip

Of course it's not an actual soldat test, but it illustrates the point nicely.

I suggest people try the example before f11/f12-ing it.
