Portal 2 and Portal 1.
« on: April 14, 2011, 10:15:26 pm »
So I pre-ordered portal 2 just two days ago, I knew I wanted it, just didn't realize how soon it would be out. any way i've didn't play the first one and I've been looking up stuff about it and it's a lot more story heavy then I thought. In fact the story is really crazy and even has references to half life!! So I want to know more about the story... So far I've read the wiki yesterday and to day but what I'm looking for is a full (over) detailed (over) analysis of the whole game and it's story, which I can't find only s**tty pieces.

Also what do you all think of portal 2. Who else pre-ordered? Ps3 Xbox Pc or Mac? I got the Ps3 version which will come with a free Pc OR Mac version that I most likely will never get to play. I think the whole gel thing is cheap and a rip off of 10 other games that have use that.

If you want to know more about Portal then just buy it and play it.

Can you name the 10 other games that Portal 2 'rips off' with it's 'cheap' gel game mechanics?

Price is going to drop by like 50% before September, not even talking about christmas 66%ish discounts. No haste.

I know, right? If you were the pirating sort, you could've gotten it last night instead of waiting another few days.

You know, IF.

Portal 1 is only $10 on steam, go buy it. :|

First of all - it's a great game.
Secondly - it'll give you some important background info about Portal 2.
Thirdly - there's a free add-on for it called Portal:Prelude, which is a prequel to Portal 1, is insanely hard, and gives even more background info (it's very bugged if you use a pirated version).

I really think you should play 1 before playing 2.

I'm amazed they want $45 for a short puzzle game without replay value. At least the original Portal was just $20 for a few hours of zany physics and funny dialogue.

My take on it so far: it's kind of fun, the dialogue is great, and the new mechanics can be trippy, but for the most part it's just same old, same old.  The escape, of what I've played of it (that's not a spoiler, is it? that you're in this testing facility and you try to get out?), isn't anywhere near as good as in the first game, and some parts are just frustrating.  "Man, who needs to see, right? Putting the player in total darkness makes it HARD."

Just beat Portal one a few minutes ago! and I listened to the commentary. Great story. a lot of the back story isn't IN the game though. Like who Cave Johnson is.hope more is explained in Portal 2. I like how we don't know what to expect in Portal 2, not a lot of gameplay videos just those cinematic trailers.

Oh and the gel mechanics...

This is tag:the power of paint from e3, 2009 I think:

That's all I got to tell the truth but I'm sure there's more.

Didn't valve actually hire the makers of that game for the portal 2 gel mechanics?

vehicledestroyer you've gotta be a lot more thorough with your research, it's the same developers who made Tag: The Power of Paint who were hired by Valve to create the gel mechanics in Portal 2.

Saying Portal 2 is a rip off of that is like saying that hiring Steven Spielberg to direct a film for you is ripping off Steven Spielberg's directing style.

Valve hired those people because those mechanics were unique and nothing ever seen before.

Classic Valve!

and when I said "rip off" I didn't mean ''GRRAAR WTF RIIIIP OFF!! u guys sux!.'' I meant, we'll really I just wanted to point out that it's nothing new. But that's so cool that Valve hired them! Now I'm even more confident in this mechanic being used uniquely and creatively; and mostly fun as hell!

So I received my copy of portal 2 a few days ago... it is fantastic.  The writing is great (both in terms of plot and in terms of humor/creativity).  I can't wait to keep playing it, I think I'm probably about 60-70% through it.
