Glad you're enthusiastic about it [flab]. I'm just waiting for the last bit of my computer to arrive before I geek out on a 1920x1080 TV monitor (for which I feel so dumb about wanting to do -- dragging my computer into another room, making a mess of things etc. -- so I'm trying to make up for it psychologically by telling myself that it's like watching a movie that I get to interact it . . .).

yeah, I love having a computer and console which can play games in full HD now - it's very fun.  I bought a 47" HDTV (1080p) last year, so the PS3 on that is pretty fantastic

To say the least, I am very excited for my video card to arrive. I have never had a computer, or been on one, that could play games with anything better than a Radeon HD 4350. I figured that is was finally time to treat myself, and respectfully for a game that cost me $50. I booted it up, but could not play it with graphics that were anything satisfactory. Portal 1? Yes, but Portal 2... needs something more epic to make it... more involving. I'm hellbent on having a good experience with a story I can only discover once. And then of course, multiplayer however many times that lasts!

Hahaha, I'm sure this post is evidence that I am 'wtf-determined'!! And then I can use this modern video card to do whatever else.

Do I have any hope of running Portal 2 on high or at least medium settings with a GeForce 7600GT? (I'm not worried about CPU or RAM, I know they can handle it). I can run Portal 1 on very high settings and from what I've seen - Portal 2 graphics don't seem much better than in 1..

You should be able to run it, but don't expect to be able to run it in very high. GeForce 7600 is listed as the minimum requirement for GPU. The graphics are much better, the engine uses a lot of new shader techniques and also uses dynamic lighting throughout.

Very true. From what little experience I've had with modern games, this one looks stunning.

I've been impressed with my iMac I bought in the fall, it's able to play every modern game I want to play at full detail and resolution (2560x1440).  and in OS X nonetheless!

I wouldn't have bought this if Steam wasn't available for Mac.  I was on the fence about a mac desktop for a long time but bought this to be able to play starcraft 2 and my steam games, plus to be able to have dual displays again (in case anyone from Apple or Valve is reading... )

I can't laugh at Mac users anymore. I remember the good old days when all they could do is play with Photoshop... Now they have Steam.

So I can only laugh at Linux users now. They have to emulate Windows to run everything. Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. Good job Mr. Non-conformist. Etc.

That seemed fast... How many hours did it take you? I can't say for sure but I know I took a lot longer then most.

dunno, maybe 8-10 hours total? maybe a bit more.  I think "real" gamers were finishing it in 5-6

Now that were done... was it worth $60? Does it have replay-ability?

oh, for those of you with PC, PS3 copies add me on steam/PSN I haven't touched co-op. vehicledestoryer. yeees it's spelled that way....

Well, I think it was one of the greatest games I've ever played. I didn't have to pretend like the game was, or looked better than it actually did, which was a change for me. Usually, when playing a game, you gotta hype yourself up a little and compensate holes with your imagination. Heck, I was too busy enjoying the dialogue, unwrapping the story, and solving the puzzles (while soaking in the graphical adequacy)...

But yeah, imaginative hype has been pissing me off lately. I realized that, with whatever games I've been playing, I've been pretending they're more interesting and awesome than they really are (it's just.. what you do when a game is.. bleh, like Mount and Blade for instance--fighting=awesome, the rest? text based, and basically preparing for the next conflict). I've jumped on the bandwagon of hype for too long, and now I'm pretty much done. All the games I used to think were awesome.. I've now got this nice objective viewpoint where I see that a lot of games out there just suck (I guess I have really limited experience though! so.. don't listen to me). They may look pretty.. but.. that's about as far as it goes.

Portal was f**kin interactive. Obviously. I didn't have to pretend that there was more to it than there really was. Also, I have an uber-limited amount of "gamer" experience, so all my opinions are really.. meh.

In summary, objectivity is a double edged sword. You tend to see things for whatever they are (you kind of take in all their factors and then look at it) which is nice, but the expansive never-ending awesome funzors land of imagination is obliterated by reality, and then things don't look so great anymore. I've been told that, as a person gets older, life tends to hold less and less charm. At least, that's what some 30 year old fella told me. Apparently nothing really excited him anymore. This might be, arguably, a good thing - I dunno.

(PS. I know I just said that I just bought a friggin new graphics card, etc. etc., and have made previous statements about buying a new computer. I know one quick conclusion with the just-mentioned facts could be, "Oh, did he expect a great computer to solve all of life's problems and curtail some sort of nerd-dom or 'cowardice,' and now he's let down?" Believe me, I'm aware of this "syndrome," and no, I kept my head over the whole ordeal. I guess this is as far as I'll vouch for myself).
