Lords of Uberdark
« on: October 19, 2011, 09:16:14 pm »
Felt like sharing this one alpha stage indie game about mining and creation. How it differers from minecraft is that it's more "dimensional" meaning you gnaw and shape polygons like smooth clay instead of playing tetris and labouring your patience with that traditional square gridness. The point and idea of this game is yet undecided and unfinished, but it can get anywhere from here.

It's been a while since I heard "MINECRAFT COPY" which makes me wonder if this "genre" has a name already.

The reason minecraft is fun is because it doesn't look like that.

In all honesty, it'll probably be fun for some people, but it seems like they were just trying too hard to impress people with the fact that it's not rigid and that everything is smooth and what not.

Now... if it had something like the frostbite engine, where you could chip away pieces of rock and whatnot, if you know what I am saying, then that would be amazing. Otherwise this isn't any different than minecraft, it's about what you prefer.

1) I still don't dignify this as a genre. Minecraft was original, this and Terraria exist for the sole purpose of profitting off Minecraft's playerbase. To me it's a fad.

2) That's a shit name, it screams of 'we couldn't think of a good name so we came up with a ridiculous one which we can pretend is ironic'.

3) It is block-based, you have been decieved, it just has diagonal subdivisions between blocks and height displacement on the terrain that make it appear to not be block based. But it actually is. It's basically a bad modelling program that you can navigate in a player view mode.

Damn how did you figure that out.

Looks like a cross between Minecraft and Ocular Ink in terms of texture manipulation and block-based interactivity.

Even if it is a "copy", it looks like a damn good one.
Last year, I dreamt I was pissing at a restroom, but I missed the urinal and my penis exploded.

Damn how did you figure that out.

With the right knowledge and an eye for detail you can figure out anything.

I just happen to know everything and have the eyes of a hawk, that's why I'm never wrong.

Technically voxel based, but it is essentially the same thing.

So basically cubes that are put at a different angle giving it an illusion of a smooth rendering.

Voxels are the 3D equivalent of pixels. A regular 3D grid of points of information. Minecraft represents these points as cubes, uberdark uses some fancy code to generate a representation of the points of information which is more complex than just cubes.

Not really sure how that spherical brush fits in to the mix, but it definately looked like a smoothed minecraft while using the cube brush.

I like the concept. It has great potential for interesting worlds and structures. You can only do so much with blocks, plus to me Minecraft's approach "EVERYTHING has to be blocks" is starting to get on my nerves. What I don't like though is the visual style - it's neither simple enough, nor smooth enough. Like 3D games from the 90's when 3D was trendy, but still too ugly to create any sort of visual style. :/
