(WM) prefix, do we need it?
« on: March 14, 2012, 06:51:29 am »
Personally i find it a bad way of signing server as modded.
If you have a better ideas what to do, post them as well.

At first I thought the second option, however, there shouldn't be a way to filter it out. It's a shame when servers with only very slight weapon changes (IE. using a weapon mod from an older version) get stuck with WM.

its quite useful for a competive gameplay as you dont really want to memorize and check the checksum of the current weaponmod each time to you join a server.

But when the server does have a weapons mod, doesn't it show the information about the changed weapons when you are in the weapons selection menu?

My point was to add it to filter lobby submenu. It's actually like that web lobby, you can include modded servers or not. Why not just making it the same in client and getting rid of (WP) prefix?

The web lobby modded filter does not work for me. Other than that i'd love the prefix to be gone by next soldat release.

I would vote on first AND second options. Leave it AND add a filter option.

Its function was vital for me back when I still used the server list. I don't want to waste a second of my game time joining, examining and leaving servers when I could have detected that they were bad from glancing at its entry in the server list.

I think it would be best to have these servers be indicated by an icon next to the country flag like the BattlEye icon used to be in 1.5 (where now it's just an empty gap). The icon should be clear in its meaning so that it indicates that weapons aren't what they should, by having it be something out of place in Soldat, such as a laser rifle, a flaming sword, a tank or something such.

And of course these servers should be possible to filter out.

Lol, didn't know what it meant until now.

According to topic, I think it's a "cheap solution" and it should be replaced.

I think it should stay until there is a nice replacement for it and the filter could be added.

I've always thought it was weird that servers with weapon mods get the "(WM)" tag while scripted servers get nothing. It makes it feel like it was a quick fix put in there before filtering, and then being forgotten about when filtering was added. Scripting can obviously do more change to a server than a weapon mod, so I think it's an unbalanced and ugly feature/bug-thing.

F12 for removing it and adding a field + filter for it instead.

This is what I thought too, it's even kinda possible to script changes to weapons as well, like exploding bullets or even gravity.
There needs to be an obvious way to see if a server is scripted and a filter for those too, because scripts can change the game a lot. A server could have 90% gravity and no one might notice.

Filtering out scripted servers?

Yeah a good way to help killing all sub-game modes.
And make sure that new ones doesn't get noticed.

Besides, scripted servers usually have explicit names.

A problem with simply filtering scripted servers is that many servers may have simple scripts such as !nextmap or others that dont modify the gamemode itself, and they would get possibly unwantedly filtered. (should that be discussed in a different thread?)

Why poll doesn't show results of voting after it had closed? SMF's weirdness or just wrong configured?

There are some good server mods and some bad ones, so I don't think it would be fair to completely hide them, or completely remove the ability to do so.
The way it's done now (server filter + indicator in server name) is fine by me. Only thing that IMHO would be better is removing (WM) and instead using a different font color for modded servers. This way it's easier to distinguish modded and non-modded servers from each other, but at the same time modded servers would stand out a bit more in the server list, getting a bit more attention.
