More Soundtracks?
« on: December 29, 2012, 06:33:23 pm »
Isn't it about the time we stagger the currently available three sole soundtracks off their lonesome fucking thrones? I'm not implying they should be going anywhere, they're classic and awesome, which means they should definitely stay. However Soldat was created what 10 years ago and it's been accompanied with the same three immutable soundtracks nearly the whole time (four soundtracks if you include the old removed intro song 'Battle' or something). There just has to be room for some more don't you think?

Now before you tell me to use WMP or iTunes to put whatever I like to the background, concentrate real hard and think would you have preferred Necrophagist banging in the background while playing Mario or maybe TISM wiggling in the background while you smear unicorns on a fucking crawler in Skyrim instead of the actually implemented atmospheric original soundtracks? Dodging the sarcasm, arguably not. One would have to be out of their mind if agreed that putting on some cheeky Skrillex playing while vibing on MDMA wearing a lingerie and a glowing 13inch strap-on bought from ebay can compensate the lack of soundtracks. Soldat isn't a fucking AudioSurf.

Some time ago when I checked this community had several talented artists within which I believe would be more than willing if not excited to participate in this with a donating sparkle in their eyes if groped gently on the shoulder. What do you developers think? Should we drain whatever the community has to offer and see if any of it would be suitable to the future Soldat? If one can imitate the style of the classics then good for them, even better in my opinion if one would come up with a modernized covers/remakes of the classics, no need to push the luck with this idea of course.

Okay, but what about the genre of the music? I personally would propably stick to the same retro indie metal style heard and memorized far in our pasts or something similar at the least, while however a small part of me would just find anything intense techno/metallic sufficient. What do you people think of all of this?

I often think about how cool it would be to do a remake of gore or something, but I don't think that anybody got the balls to do it.
Sound sfx's isn't too good either..

I'm all for it, but I don't see it happening anytime soon.

Same as graphics music is also an important appeal in games. This is something easy to achieve together with a community, it shouldn't be left in dark.

As much as I'd like to see a lengthier and better-fitting soundtrack, I don't think Soldat is the kind of game where it's easy to achieve. Some of us look at Soldat differently, so you can't really make a soundtrack that appeals to everyone. Especially if it's rock/metal - this one's really hard to make good in games. The only such soundtrack that I remember that was actually good is Painkiller soundtrack.

I agree but we shouldn't make devs step away from fixing bugs and focus on music. If someone from outside of the dev team is willing to do this and has enough both time and resources I see no problem with updating it a little bit, as it may hurt ears of newcomers. On the other hand how hard is it to run winamp in the background with your favorite music in it and make shortcuts on your keyboard for next/previous song(that's what i do when i want to listen to music while playing soldat)

Im chill like that

Unappealing or not, music is always better than no-music.
If someone from outside of the dev team is willing to do this
None of the developers needs to get their hands dirty with this one. All they need to do is approve of this idea so that people going to work on it know that their music is wanted and they're not wasting time. Even if this sounds unimportant, it's something very easy and worthwhile to achieve.

I am absolutly supporting this idea. Smiluu, you are a talented music artist. Maybe you break the ice and throw something suitable together? Others will surely follow your example ;)

F12 all the way; The internet, and I bet the Soldat community, are riddled with people willing to do it just for the heck of it... And if it hurts anyone's ears they can always just hit F5 mid-game or turn off the music from the settings menu.

I too would be interested in this. My only preference is that the music remains similar to the original soundtracks. You can tweak the genre a bit if the end result is good, I just don't want it to extend to dubstep or something that sounds really out of place in soldat (no offense to dubstep).

Another question, would it be possible to contact the original composer of the classic soldat tracks to see if he'd be willing to contribute again?

Chiptunes? First reaction is that it doesn't sound like a genre suitable for soldat. Second reaction, it might give soldat an interesting tone. So i'm somewhat neutral for chiptones, but would still prefer more of a hard rock arrangement.

There's so many different kinds of chip tune music it's really hard to say whether it'll suit Soldat or not. Blatant 8-bit style music won't suit Soldat since it has nothing in common with it. Something in the style of GBA or SNES music might work though, as long as it doesn't scream LOOK, I'M OLDSCHOOL in your face.

Too bad we can't just hire Alexander Brandon for this. :(

F12,
Chiptunes should be good with soldat. In my opinion soldat, needs music at a fast paced. But who said, that chiptunes can not sound like that?
Overall, i'm neutral to both (chiptunes and hardrock)

@L[0ne]R
I'm saying about my friend, who said the chiptunes are slow (so, no offence)
Corrected before someone gonna say the same as my buddy said

Sounds good.

I can't see Soldat using chiptunes that would be too much of a change.
