Law suit would be quite the free ad, also mm would be suited not the community coders.

Don't think it would be of any help and I think I should encourage it.

Well Chainsaw name will not change. But as for the alternative weapon name text file that could be done.
Also M134 SAW would be a bad name then. I guess we should take M134 LMG instead ;)

My Vote:
USSOCOM           .45 Tactical Pistol
Desert Eagles     .50 Double Eagles
HK MP5            MPK Navy 5; MPN 5
Ak-74             Kalashnikov A74
Steyr AUG         Stag 55 LAR; StG 77 LAR
Spas-12           Pounder S-12; Thumper S-12
Ruger 77          Kruger K77
M79               M79
Barrett M82A1     Baguette M107A9; Baretta M82A1
FN Minimi         M249 LMG
XM214 Minigun     M134 Minigun
Flamer            Flamethrower
Rambo Bow         Rambo Bow
Flamed Arrows     Flaming Arrows; Fire Arrows; Explosive Arrows
Combat Knife      Combat Knife
Chainsaw          Chainsaw
M72 LAW           M72 LAW

In regards to "Baguette" -  let's face it, Soldat isn't such a serious game, and "Baguette" is not such a silly name as "MR ONE SHOT!", so personally, I wouldn't mind it being official. :D Baguette and Barrett look and sound a bit similar. "Baretta" is a nice alternative though that stays close to the original.
MP5 - Keep in mind that there is already an "MPK-5", so I'm not sure how safe my suggestion is. I'm also not sure about using "Kalashnikov", although really it's a person's last name, they can't sue for that, can they?

Actually, i'm liking Loner's weapon names. They still sound like real weapons without sounding generic.

Here's my opinions on the above:

I'd prefer the MPK Navy 5 name over MPN 5

Ak-74 to Kalash x74a | Using the name Kalashnikov may be restricted, i mean it's a brand name, right? Using the abbreviated name, and a little number tweaking, should make it recognizable but still legal.

I like the sound of StG 77 LAR over Stag 55 LAR

If we can use the Baretta name for the Barrett, i'd prefer that.

For the flamed arrows, it sounds better to me if they were called 'flaming' arrows instead.

Ok so since it's best to keep the old weapon names where possible here a list of weapons which will keep their old names:

Rambo Bow

I think the lawyers representing the estate of Millennium Films might disagree to this.

Thanks, though some of the credit goes to other contributors, since I used some parts from their ideas. I'm still not sure about the name for Spas-12. I like the S-12 part, but "Pounder" or "Thumper" don't really sound.. right to me. Those words have absolutely no link with Spas. "Super S-12" sounds better but also cheesier. :/

I've got a couple more suggestions:

Spas-12 to FPA-12 Special |  Given that the name of the company that created this weapon was called Franchi, maybe we can stir that along with the original name to create something new. FPA-12 is the result.

Barrett M82A1 to BFMAR 500 | I used a similar process to create this name. Using the initials of this weapon's manufacturer changes the tone of the name, but I'm not sure if we can keep that tone if we are to avoid potential legal issues.

If you don't like the BFMAR 500, then i have an alternative: AMR-T28 Scoped. This changes the name even more from the Barrett, though, but it does sound fairly good.

the ones i personally like among shoozza's suggestions.

nice and generic:

USSOCOM: Pistol
Desert Eagles: Dual Pistons
HK MP5: Submachine Gun
Ak-74: Assault Rifle
Steyr AUG: Bullpup Rifle
Spas-12: Shotgun
Ruger 77: Hunting Rifle (this is very cool actually)
M79: Thumper ([pigtail] nice)
Barrett M82A1: Sniper Rifle
FN Minimi: Machine Gun
XM214 Minigun: Chaingun (my favourite)
Flamer: Flamer
Rambo Bow: The Bow (Tribal Bow, maybe? Or something exotic like, something that will give the impression of some tribal/ancient "the one bow" or something, maybe the medieval sounding Holy Bow or i dont know. something outlandish/exotic would really fit the rambo bow)
Flamed Arrows: - (something related to my bizarre idea)
Combat Knife: Combat Knife
Chainsaw: Chainsaw
M72 LAW: Bazooka (sounds quite fun to me)

I think this is a little silly.

I am not a lawyer but common sense tells me that a lawsuit will not happen when the cost of filing the lawsuit will clearly outweigh any damages that might be claimed by the plaintiff. I think this is probably the case with soldat's meager revenues (If it still generates any at all).

However, if this going to happen, I would keep as many names the same and have generic names for the rest.

Thats roughly my thoughts on this as well.
Not only would nobody bother to sue soldat devs, there is also -afaik- absolutely no legal precedent for doing so. Just because a few game developers chose not to use real (trademarked) weapon names in their games does not mean there is an actual risk of legal action whatsoever.

Also, you wouldnt get sued right off the bat. First youd probably get a nice cease and desist letter or whatever the equivalent is in wherever those legal proceedings would be filed.
In that unlikely event, there'd still be more than enough time to put out a quick fix with generic names.

Sheesh ... you'd think this game had no actual code problems.

Don't forget that you can always change the weapons names back by coping the old Soldat/txt/weaponsnames.txt over the new one.

Shoozza: I knew youd say that. That wasnt my point. I dont care what theyre called personally, but as a principle I find it silly to worry about (imo) imaginary threats like this.

Don't be so sure of that. Private people are getting sued left and right all over the world by trolls like Lodsys, MPAA and RIAA, to name a few. And Soldat is hosted in USA where the laws are especially bananas.

EA has recently dropped licenses for some of the guns in their games, and TotalBiscuit has provided some interesting insight on the topic. I think it's worth a listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uWxuEDeod4#t=9m13s
