yeah JEEZ i came by here to hang out and see who still posted to discover how infrequent of a thing that is. yikes
hi Blacksheepboy, Shoozza, DorkeyDear, cheeseman, good to see y'all

Alternatives to teh forum, 'cause it's so depressing:
What if we left this forum running but heavily advertised the official soldatforums IRC channel? We could all hang out there and talk about soldat, there are so few of us that it might make the most sense. or maybe a soldatforums subreddit? I know reddit has a bad rap to many but I personally find the hierarchical style of posting and responding to people superior to these classic categorized forums (at least for small homogenous communities).

The forum could stay open for newbies who have questions or want to browse what's left of the maps/mods.
What about official soldat gameservers? We could set dates for soldat gathers, say, on a couple random days in each month, so everyone has a shot at making it to one.

With the addition of background polys i'm tempted to get back into mapping. make a mappack or whatever. i know i was never the best mapmaker but pumping some consistent and new content into the game might do it some good. Dunno. Was polyworks fixed to support background polys?

As for the devs & new versions, the game looks really good nowadays. I like where it finally matured to— I still liked 1.3.1 the most but y'know whatevs
All the same, perhaps we as a community should brainstorm to figure out what soldat's FINAL FORM should be. if just a couple more bugfixes and a quiet death is what we really want, or if Something Big could happen.
Edit: Just read that post by Adam. My sentiments exactly, too bad I don't know what to do about any of this.

omg jrgp grilled cheese is the fucking EASIEST thing to cook. ok that's it i'm making a soldat cooking show brb

I used to sit and refresh the forums, waiting for responses.

I still do that. Whenever I'm on a computer, even at work at every job i've had, I always have an 'Active Topics' tab open and refresh it periodically throughout the day. I know some oldies refer to these forums as their first "internet forum" and have since moved elsewhere, but I haven't. Only forums I visit are these and 4chan, the latter of which doesn't count as its stateless and i only browse it when i'm drunk at 2am. Even if I didn't get into a staff position in the soldat/thd community and gain responsibility for maintaining the soldat forums/servers, I'd still come here and refresh active topics as a community member.

Too soon for the shit posting or?

God DAMN that looks good. I should probably learn to cook and buy ingredients to make that kind of sandwhich. Food porn is always welcome, even if it's for the sole purpose of keeping a forum alive. I don't know what that bowl is filled with though.

post a devlog already

Where the fuck are the devs anyway? Shoozza has yet to get back to me when i linked him this thread.

I once talked with shoozza about a "approved" server tag in lobby so people can easily choose best servers, but it didint go further than discussion. After all there are only a handful of servers active daily left so why even bother. I once though of an anti-idle day http://forums.soldat.pl/index.php?topic=43112.msg516416#msg516416 but obviously no one cared.

Regarding "official" servers, I host 18 for KAG (spread over US, DE, and AU) and their IPs/ports are hardcoded into the game itself so they show up gold colored and bold in the ingame server list. That is mainly for quality control as Furai maintains those servers in terms of banning people and setting the modes and stuff. I think Soldat would benefit from that if it had the player base it did 10 years ago.

It would also make sure that people could maybe play on good servers again.
Currently the few "new players" Soldat will get will have to play on unmoderated servers which are full of retards running around with their Chainsaw, Brt & M79 for the whole time.
They'll have to play with 20 people on maps which were made for 6-8 players and they will get spammed with retarded scripts and in the end they will think that the /mine command which places a mine on the ground is an official game feature.
Then they'll uninstall the game.

There is #soldat.devs and no one ever talks about the game there (no one talking about anything there at all). What should we talk abou though? There is not too much to talk about anymore after 12 years.

Yes! Working just fine!

Adam's post quite much points it out.

- discouraging talented and motivated people always bothered me / It seemed that no one really cared about the amazing work Akinaro made for Soldat and again no one saw the high rate of work he contributed. He would have been capable of redoing all Soldat maps / Menus / Logs and everything visual related in a very short time but all he got was insults. one of his maps
He is by far the best mapper we had in visual terms, everyone disagreeing here, has no idea.

but the fact that suggestions have been ignored for years and hold back made the game and the forums to where we are now.
I'm especially talking about the

- GUI
- Account System / Soldat Portal (which was highly blamed by soldatforums members for no reaon)

- Ant-Cheat (it's not that bad without anti-cheat right now but I guess it didn't have a good impact though)

I have made a post about the need of a new GUI and Account System / Portal / Stats on selfkill.com which must have been in 2006 or 2007 and all the german community did was giving dumb replys like "play Call of Duty then" because they lack the idea behind what marketing is and how important the visual look of the menu and GUI is (the first thing the player will see after installing the game) and the portal (which shows the latest game news, manuals, links and what not) and Account System (for the case that there is no anti-cheat, it will help to get hackers banned, it does give the devs statistics about the playerbase, new registrations etc. and of corse the stats system which is one of the most important things in games since it's getting people hooked.)

the list is quite large.

By the way: For everyone who really still believes that bug-fixing is needed in Soldat, I'm just saying this:

Soldat is quite much BUGFREE.
EA Sports, a multi-million company, releasing FIFA every year has bugs. (ref will end the match if it's in 90+ but if you are just about to shoot a goal, because they are too dumb to recognize that YOURPLAYER.POSITION = close to the enemies goal
it has several other bugs which BREAK the game.

Soldat doesn't have such. (I'm not counting eats as a bug)
I play Soldat on a highly frequence again and I can say that I have never seen heavy bugs which would break the game.

Don't even try to argue with me, you will get smashed  :-\

but yeah, welcome back

Why does everyone think we turn talents down? Should we have gladly embraced his major douchebaggery with joy as he tramples on all the things socially not accepted in this forum? Have we called him out like "your stuff sucks, go away!" ???

No, we did not. We encouraged him to map, but also told him to shut the fuck up. He didn't, and now he's gone. Or were we supposed to hold our arses for him so he may ravage in us for the sake of a couple of maps? You got to be kidding me.

As for myself, I was discouraged to map, because none of the staff responsible for maps got in contact with me. I wrote a couple of PMs asking for what's up and whether they need help fixing bugs in maps, or what they think about the remakes - but nothing. Akinaro was actually told his maps are amazing, so what the fuck.

I can set up some "official" servers (in US, DE, and AU) and work with shoozza to make them stand out in the ingame list, depending on whether or not he thinks this is a good idea. I already host (and rent) a bunch of soldat servers for random people, and of course the "jrgp's" servers which occasionally are full.

No one ever disputed his mapping ability. He was heavily praised for it. You are ignoring the fact that he was not polite or friendly which is why he left.

Regarding an account system/portal: right before EnEsCe was kicked off the devteam he did complete an account system and portal for the game, including "lobby chat" based on IRC. The added functionality garnered mixed to negative reception. Once development was transferred to Shoozza, the new devteam worked for a while removing all traces of the account system from the code.

I agree with you about bugfreeness. I've played the hell out of most of the Soldat releases since 1.2.1 and none of the "bugs" pissed me off that much and I hardly ever noticed them.

Players choose where they want to play, if out of 150 online servers they choose my 4 ctfs it means they are serving their purpose perfectly.
-mine command is only available on ctf#2 so dont overreact
-ctf#4 is 16 slots and is most popular server atm so dont question players taste
- theres m79 and ret limitation scripts running
- there are no admins cause everyone from the old admin crew eventually stopped playing or plays once per month, however im on arsse 7:50am-4pm on weekdays as i can easily run it at work so yeah theres that, if help is needed everyone can easily request me. Plus you know there are votekicks and players can use their inner democracy to take care of the server themselves
- your arguments are invalid ;d

I'd put up with bullshit. Some people are just, well, whatever. That doesn't define their status in the community, or maybe shouldn't. Well, at least if they offer positive content... well whatever. My argument is words are cheap. I guess maybe he should have noticed this too.

For a while this has been the case with my remakes too. I realize some of them still have a long way to go, and I'm glad that at least Fortress and Warehouse remakes got in, so not all is bad. I'd love to see your Voland remake too, it's incredible especially in comparison to how butt-ugly the original is. Some of Akinaro's remakes are also amazing and it would be great if they were included as defaults, but alas, Akinaro would rather have them rot away.

It would be nice to have a slightly better communication from the map team, so map(re)makers are better aware of what their remakes are lacking and why are they not added to the default pack. There are some really good remakes out there, it's a real shame they're nothing but a piece of eyecandy buried in the forums' depths.

No, players dont choose where they want to play by themself and they dont pick your 4 Servers out of 150. They pick your 4 servers out of 15 servers (which have some players on it) and since your servers got the most players they'll most likely join them. It has nothing to do about the servers but no one will join empty servers. That's just it.

If you start growing up with some cheap fake coka cola then you'll obviously drink it, not because it tastes so amazing, but because you don't know any alternatvies.
Your map pool is that fake coka cola and the players didn't have the opportunity to taste the amazing real coke yet.

As I said above they are not active for their quality but for the inactivity of all other servers. Players will always join the full servers instead of empty servers and those are yours right now.
I'm mad about the poor way Soldat looks like if players would play on them. I remember having fun a few years ago on public servers. I can't say that nowadays (at least on the CTF Servers)

jrgp:

I must assume that all people he ever had trouble on the forums here lack the sense of how to socialize.
It's quite easy to find out about how other people think and behave and someone with a common sense about that could just have shutup by himself instead of insulting him for no reason over and over again. Things like "You are a good mapper but a horrible person" as a first reply to a new map doesn't really give a good impact on such.
If you know that your opinions might be different than by some other member but you see him contributing aweseome work to the community then just shut the fuck up or answer in a solid way that he won't be hurt too much.
It's quite easy, just read his mind a little.

Also, do something about the mapping team, wow and replace those awful old maps and replace them with the TONS of remakes we have there, or add some new. WHERE IS THE PROBLEM HERE ?! Jesus.
It's not even work to do, just copy+paste (shortkey : CMD+C then CMD+V if that will help)

I know about that, it was the most promising soldat version we ever had and it was sad to not see it happen. It worked just amazing in the beta.
Even though it was even added way too late back in the days, and when NSC didn't share the code no one seemed to bother to re-do it.

About merging all THD related forums to one:

Why not ?
It's not a bad thing and especially about marketing that's a good way to get the new THD games shared to the playerbase of the other games.
I dont see something bad about it just that it's no longer as unique as a "private" forum.

About the dead forum:
I myself am more the reader than the writer and I guess others act the same way, and if there is nothing to read (by others) the chance will even get lower to ever write something. Time of "modding, mapping, tools, interfaces and whatnot" releases is over too. So, most things we could talk about are some offtopic things or whenever there is a devlog ( which does not happen too often sadly and the last 2 devlogs quite much said that there was no code-progress made yet, at least nothing about that was posted)

You can't create a hype if there is nothing to hype about.

I just hope to see those "big projects" for 1.6.8 - 1.7, whatever they are but I hope one of them is a new GUI.

CTF#4 as you might have picked up from the name was created last. So its purely players decision they play there. As for maps I tried to introduce big ass maps to ctf#4 with slight success but it turned worse with time so I had to reverse it. Old mapslist consisted of gems like ctf_Kaolon, ctf_Harlequin, ctf_Festen, ctf_Silence etc

In december it will 5 year anniversary of starting my first zabijaka.pl server, this indicates that players indeed chose them over others.

@L[One]R: Exactly my thoughts. On an unrelated note: I would love to see you frequent deviantART more. :P

@darDar: Here's the web definition for constructive criticism for starters: Constructive criticism is the process of offering valid and well-reasoned opinions about the work of others, usually involving both positive and negative comments, in a friendly manner rather than an oppositional one.

I bet you could help Bonecrusher better his servers. I too believe they need some tweaking here and there, so why not? He's sponsoring them off his own money, I don't think he deserves being talked to like that.

I cannot resist pointing the irony out when you call the community out for 'turning talents down by insulting them' (generalisation btw, it was only Akinaro) and then you compare Bonecrusher's servers to fake cola. Way to go.

Yeah... I haven't checked out his maps, but from what I heard, they were pretty fancy.
