Realistic: Player disappears, his chat doesn't
« on: September 02, 2014, 06:53:17 pm »
I just played some realistic ctf.
And I noticed that the player disappears, if I don't see him. But his chat doesn't.
Is that wanted to be?!

..If I think about it, why not.. If I carry this over to the real world: If someone shouts something in a battle, it's his problem...

as far as i remember, general chat is always visible and teamchat is only visible when you see the enemy

or maybe it was only suggested, I don't remember, would have to test it :D

Yeah that's all true.
In normal mode, when the player is always visible it doesn't really matter.
I just wondered how it should be in realistic mode..
But I guess it's okay how it is. It's just the textual counterpart to shouting.. If you wanna hide, you shouldn't shout..

It'd sure be nicer if text was completely hidden in Realistic. As real as it gets. ;o

Well, realistically you CAN hear behind you even if you can't see behind you so it kind of makes sense.. Gameplay-wise though I think it does ruin the stealth aspect a bit, so I agree on hiding overhead TEAM-chat from realistic. Regular chat should stay visible though.

As far as I remember the team chat was visible only when the player was visible and general chat is visible always.

In every crime film the cops make handsigns (and switch off the radio) if they don't want to be heared. That's why I don't like the idea of treating the on-screen-visibility of normal- and team-chat differently..

BUT:
In reality dead people can't talk! So I'd say deactivate team-chat for dead people.
I see that it might get a little boring, if one can't chat at all (normal or team) when one is dead, but at least deactivate the team-chat, sothat both opponents have the same chances, if the dead try to talk...
That's as fair as it can get while not restricting chat too much.

If you would allow dead-people-team-chat and hide team-chat at all at the same time, I can imagine that this would encourage camping even more... Then every dead one would convert into a scout or something..

The problem with keeping the chat visible even if you don't see the player anymore is that the chat text moves with the player and tells you where he went.

I know, I know..
I think it's a feature: In reality, shouting something usually takes some time as well. And while you shout, someone else can track your location.
To make it more realistic, one could fit the time of the text being visible (on screen, not in the console) to its length. So a "Yes!" would disappear quickly, while a "Hmm, yeah I think so too, my friend!" would stay visible for a longer time..

I think the aspect of being quiet (= not writing) if you have to, should remain as it is. I mean you could even use that for some odd tactics:
Shout something and move in one direction. When the text is gone, go into another direction and hope the enemy thinks you are somewhere else..
It's a "I know, you think, I don't know that you think you know where I am"-tactic...

What do you think of silencing (only team-chat) dead people??

It would be cool for ctf.
I often have to wait before taunting where the EFC is. Otherwise he would know that we know and could change route for example.

But that's the fun part. You can also deliberately do this to confuse the enemy.

Huh?! Just to get this right: I mean silencing team-chat for dead players, so only being able to chat normally.
I don't like it when dead playerst start to squeal..

I think you can already do this via scripting (mute player if dead) and I don't see an advantage doing it.
