New/updated mapping tutorials/resources
« on: March 06, 2012, 01:30:03 pm »
hey folks

i think we need some good mapping tutorials. a lot of the older ones are incredibly outdated, and some of the ones that are still applicable to today's standards aren't very good. the majority of maps are being made by the same 5 - 6 people and any new maps being made aren't using interesting concepts and features, simply because they aren't explained anywhere!

so i'm asking if anyone would make some new, updated mapping tutorials that don't just explain how to make maps (even though not very many do this too well, and no video tutorials!) but the features of polyworks, how to make maps fun and things to think about, colour and shading, creating textures and sceneries etc.

i think we need a big overhaul on this. i'm not an especially good mapper, so am asking if anyone would be interested in this, or agrees with me. i'll help all i can obviously.

adram, what you say is right. New polytypes are poorly explored. When you said "and no video tutorials", do you want one or do you not? I can do a series of vĂdeos like I did once (that time was in Portuguese), this time in English.

I just need some instruction of how to do so in a way that I don't need to manage 4GB videos... I used hyper cam 2

well i was thinking video tutorials should only really be used to demonstrate actions in a full, written tutorial, if that makes sense? video tutorials can be helpful, but having to pause and unpause/rewind them can be a bit frustrating also.

as for screen capture software, i have a bunch of links somewhere to some decent software that should help with exported file sizes.. i'll try dig them out.

but yeah, any/all tutorials and resources!! lets get people making some maps!

ok, I could help make a tutorial, but I don't map default-stylish very often

The first thing you want to do is start with a sketch I guess

most videos without commentary (will change)
First step, Sketch
Second step, Layout/test sketch
Third step, Mess around
Fourth step, Aesthetics (I didn't record any of this)

Poorishly designed map; I think in terms of islands and curvy sides usually, this works ok

For exporting videos, I use Avidemux. It took 2.5gb 30 minute video to 200mbs

nice tutorial, a good example.
You should change second step: the easiest (maybe best) way of turning a sketch into the layout is to save it on your soldat scenery folder, and then use it as background scenery ;)

P.s. I don't know if it was sound because I don't have any speakers here.

I have done this before; it works well
