Hey Sidwulf! Glad you found your way (back) to the forums :-) I do think similar than you but as you can see (in this thread for instance) the developers (i.e. Shoozza mainly) don't want to publish Soldat on Steam yet. However, I do think that this is a topic we should not lose sight of.
I merged your thread with the existing thread about that topic, and if you use the forum search you'll be able to find loads of posts about that discussion...

I am a SOLDAT vet and I came back to play this update.

And I'm thinking to myself.

You guys would literally be rolling around in millions if you put this shit on STEAM

I GUARENTEE SOLDAT would make it to the Top Sellers list on the first few pages.

Price it at $15

SOLDAT would go viral!

There is only 30 people playing online right now. This is sad. There would be HUNDREDS if SOLDAT was on STEAM.

You deserve so much recognition and $$$ for this amazing, unique, no bullshit game that I spent much of my younger days enjoying.

I do not think it can work with a price tag. Is has been always free and people would ask why you would have to pay for it now. Only option I see for a price tag is making some kind of big overhaul, name it Soldat 2 or Soldat HD and release it then. Or, release at Early Access and put the money into the development of the game.

If bunch of utter garbage that Jim Sterling is covering on YouTube can make its way to Steam, I don't see why Soldat (a pretty decent game) couldn't be released on Steam and do well.

Release it as free to play with an added option to upgrade to the full version. This way the game comes to Steam as well as keeps true to its shareware roots.

While Soldat isn't exactly ready to be on Steam as a final release, I think it maybe a good time to push it to Early Access. Each time a product is released on Steam, be it a final release or Early Access - it gets a little boost of publicity as it gets listed in the "new releases" on the front page. Soldat should take advantage of Early Access for that extra bit of publicity, as well as a new autoupdate platform and possibly Steam Workshop support.

The Early Access 'Store' is supposed to be for alpha/beta/... staged games, to get bugs reported, suggestions gathered and build a community of interested people. Soldat, a 14 years old game, where 99% of the bugs are known to the devs, the forums are overloaded with suggestions and simply the fact that it's NOT in alpha/beta/... stage as the matter of the fact that it was released 14 years ago, should be enough to not qualify it for !Early! Access. I'm always happy of any kind of PR that would help Soldat, but not by putting it on places where it does not belong to. If you want to get this game on STEAM, there are a few things which need to be done first and all of them are known (making the whole game more user friendly, accounts/stats/achievements, new menu, anti-cheat, less 'eats' (better netcode), auto-updater, global visual theme).

I agree. And what makes us automatically think that if soldat were on steam we would get more players? Could it be that what we actually want is all the things darDar mentioned here, and we assume that if soldat were on steam the devs would have to make it happen fast?

We know that releasing this game on steam will most likely not increase server population... however I do believe that temporarily it may just do that - increase the server population, and that's our fucking shot! I was always excited about this game being great - here is still a ray of hope that it might be a great game one day. Even though people have been negative towards this game its only because they want it to fulfill all its potential. All i hear is that we're not ready, bugs here and there.. for god sake scaremongering is never a good thing to do! There are games on Steam that are doing very well and are in worse state that Soldat is currently at. There are literally dozens of Early Access games and Open Beta games on there that are getting much less care and attention than this game is getting, and these games are doing perfectly fine! Steam will open the game up to millions of potential players, provide instantly advertising and see many more people signing up for the game, especially as the only game of this type its really going up against is an oldie LIERO!?. I don't see any negatives at all. In fact if Soldat does go to Steam I will be one of the people to download through Steam and will be posting unbiased but positive reviews of the game (no need to be negative about the games current drawbacks). I understand that the only thing that can fix population in the long term is addressing the code problems, visuals etc and setting up things in a way that they will breed continuous increase in population, but getting this to steam will give more time to devs to work on it! It will boost the activity just for the short period of time and that's our shot! That's gonna be the time to implement changes and bring Soldat to a new level because there is no way we can get anything more than a temporary increase in population with that philosophy of not doing nothing. But devs brought here HD, why not accounts and all the other suggestions? Yes, I have seen some games getting a lot of neagive reviwes from peole because either it was too buggy or released too early. But after the fixes the positive reviews started flowing. Every time the game gets attention, just for some time, but it's our time! If you fix the things in this period we'll get this game to its potential. If you can instantly increase your population by around 20%, why wouldn't you? Steam can and will do that. Many people only play games from the Steam platform. The idea of going anywhere else and downloading a game to them is simply not an option. If it isn't on Steam, they don't play it. Steam is definitely a good place to start...I mean at this point it definitely can only do some good. LETS DO IT BOIZ!

Soldat has been around for 14 years, but how many of those years has it been on Steam? None. Therefore any potential Steam-related bugs and problems are completely unknown and unreported, which is enough of a reason to warrant an Early Access release first, to ensure the final Steam release goes smooth. It's not an early access to Soldat, but an early access to Soldat-on-Steam, along with any new major features that it never had. (Heck, considering how many problems Soldat has even now, I'd say it never evolved past Beta stage). A short boost in publicity could also boost community involvement (bug reporting, feedback, content) than the small community we have on the forums, but that's just a bonus.

Either way, I don't think semantics of "Early Access" should be the deciding factor in the matter, but whether or not it will help Soldat.

I agree, some more work needs to be done before Soldat is properly released on Steam, but there's a limit to that. Considering how slow the progress is, can you imagine how long it'll take to implement "accounts/stats/achievements, new menu, anti-cheat, less 'eats' (better netcode), auto-updater, global visual theme"? I don't see this getting done in at least a few more years. I don't think an Early Access release would need anything more than a new UI and a built-in tutorial.

Why price tag wont work ? Come on. Current players of soldat is playing this game like more than ten years. I believe that every player that i see on SCTFL community will buy it without a doubt.15$ isnt that much big deal + we will have anti-cheat in it so this will be more exciting to buy than current versions. But i dont believe that its ready to go now. Still need some netcode improvements and anti-cheats.

I was hoping we could achieve an anti-cheat.

how?

Add a donate button on these forums or somewhere else that direct to a soldat only bank account, that will entirely serve its purpose for the anti-cheat(maybe even more depending on the amount).

I for certain would be willing to donate a standard amount each month, and im pretty sure more people are able/willing to.

Is this a possibility?

On the steam subject area, I think the devs should also maintain an official page on Steam such as Link.
Devlogs, news, etc... all there.

Just leaving this here before I inevitably lose the link. TotalBiscuit's video on how he picks games to be featured in his channel, which may be useful info when/if there are more active promotion for Soldat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pRDRCorx14
