Gostek/Soldier graphics - translation and structure
« on: November 11, 2015, 12:54:43 am »
In light of future "HDfication" of Soldat, I think it's a good opportunity to also improve file naming and structure to make it easier to understand for non-polish modders, and to make file structure less cluttered and easier to support potential new content (more soldier customization?).

I've posted my translation, but feel free to post your own suggestions too.

I've also included alternative versions for some already-english names.

POLISH NAME -------ENGLISH NAME
gostek-gfxsoldier-gfx <--- main folder
rannywounds <--- subfolder
badgerambo
biodropelvis
cigarocigar
dlonhand
dredhair1-dreadlock
helmhelmet
kamizelkavest
kapcap
klatachest
lancuchdogtag
lecistopafoot-jets
metaldogtag-chain
mordahead
nogalower-leg
paraparachute
ramieupper-arm
rekalower-arm
stopafoot
udoupper-leg
zlotogold
zlotolancuchgold-chain

Additionally, I'd like to suggest a few things about folder structure:

  • Base soldier graphics should have some kind of prefix that sorts them in order from head to feet:

    1_head
    2_upper-arm
    3_lower-arm
    4_hand
    5_chest
    6_upper-leg
    7_lower-leg
    8_foot
    9_foot-jets

    .
  • Customization items like dogtags, different headgear, and possibly other things that might get added in the future should be in their own sub-folder(s), to not mix them in with the base soldier graphics.
    .
  • Customization items should have their own prefixes based on the slot they take up. For example: head_cap.bmp ; head_helmet.bmp.

That's all I can think of right now.

I approve! Doesn't sound like the highest priority, but it should be done.

Sounds good!

This will make mod development a lot more convenient.

Good idea. Here's the only suggested change I have:
dreddread

You might also think about renaming texture files, too. Names like "gruszka" or "porzeczka" are not really self-explaining to me :3

Help.txt files in other folders would be helpful as well, e.g. in sparks-gfx -> It's not easy to figure out when things like "blacksmoke", "lilsmoke", "minismoke" or "bigsmoke" are used.

I'm not sure about dreadlock translation either. Dreadlocks are locks of hair that are "dready". So both "dread" and "lock" is correct, but I suppose it would make more sence to have it named "dread" in context of what the haircut actually is. Changed to "dread" in the main post.

I'll eventually go through and make suggestions/translations for other files too.

What was it before you edited it? Because it should most definitely be "dreadlocks"; you could also use the slang "dreads", but that's not as suitable.

"Dred" is what it was before. It's an image of a single dreadlock, so a plural would technically be incorrect.

Ah, in that case it should just be "dreadlock".

I suggest renaming the following files in sparks-gfx, too:

40mm-luska
gauge-luska
odlamek1
odlamek2
odlamek3
odlamek4
odprysk
orglilsmoke
plomyk
skrawek

Since I don't know what any of these files are for, I cannot suggest better names, though.

We decided to delay the renaming for sometime after 1.7.0. As it breaks mods and isn't really super important.
So there is enough time to figure out the perfect naming.

Fair enough. What about editing / completing the existing modding guide then?
Could we do this any way? And would someone be willing to help me with that?

We could have a page on soldat.pl for this or on the wiki. Maybe include it in the game installer (though that one is getting big already)

A simple .pdf for instructions on modding will suffice I believe. It can be light-weight and do the job just fine. I don't think there is much hope in reviving Soldat wiki. ;)
